Brenda Laurel first wrote this book in the '80s, thus very early-on shifting the computing paradigm from the office to an artistic cultural context. With emerging media hitting the markets 15 years later, providing interfaces beyond the desktop box, this book has finally come of age. Computers as Theatre offers an entirely new perspective upon the development of the modern technologies of computation and communication. The main theme of this multithemed book is that these technologies offer new opportunities for creative, interactive experiences and, in particular, for new forms of drama, to go beyond that which was possible until now. To think of human interaction as drama is to think broadly, to take a wide overview, and to emphasize the thematic aspects of our daily activities and needs. By doing so, we free ourselves from small, mundane considerations. This book forces us to take a wider, broader perspective on the nature of human activity.
