Carboncare Food Information System

Lisa Stockton and Wesley Richardson are winners of the Royal Society of Arts / Dott 07 competiton to do with food information systems. Their investigation centered on food shopping, where they discovered that no clear universal system of knowing a product’s background exists yet. "By giving the consumer the means to make more informed choices, beginning with food shopping and growing to encompass energy consumption and travel amongst others, we see this as a way to readjust the balance of our cumulative carbon emissions".
Their scenario for a carboncare scheme addresses a problem with the proposed UK government carbon allowance: there would be no way of crediting your allowance without paying money.
The underlying logistics, to provide an incentive to consumers and targets for manufacturers to reach, along with its visual appearance were designed to make this complex information simple and accessible. At each design stage the focus was on using existing technology at each step of the consumer journey, with this familiarity ensuring the scheme would be viable in reality.
