Social Objects

Our interest is to develop tools and practices that would make the consumption of locally-produced and second-hand objects socially attractive on the web. In the Social Objects project we collaborate with local artists, public institutions and technology developers in order to study and conceptualize new ways in which locally produced goods, art, design, and craft can mediate and generate social relations between people on the web.
The concept development is based on a free product code service called Thinglink, which is an open standard and service for anyone to use. We have developed Thinglink for goods that are not part of commercial identification schemes such as UPC (Universal Product Code) or ASIN (Amazon Identification Number), but that would still benefit from unique identification on the web. Thinglinks can be used as metadata in any kinds of datasets and services, not only on thinglink.org. Using thinglinks as tags on articles, blog posts, photos or videos make it possible to 1) aggregate online discussion around particular items, 2) track their history, and 3) develop new ways of connecting through particular objects on the web.
In the framework of Social Objects project, we have developed thinglink.org further into a simple collective filtering system for locally produced and second hand objects, which enables people to discover and recommend new things through their social network. In the project we will also explore how this recommendation system could work in mobile handsets, and this way, provide people with tools for more sustainable and socio-culturally motivated consumption. At the Doors workshop we will focus on the possibility of using the new Thinglink service for connecting around locally-produced food.
